Sometimes you need to buy a souvenir, to sell it later elsewhere as a City-to-do-task.
If you have sold the item already, by accident, don't worry. You can always go back later and buy it again. If it's not for sale in the Souvenir Shop, you just need to leave, sleep another day in the hotel or on the streets, use up your energy by answering city questions or doing jobs and then, when it's night again, you can try again in the Souvenir Shop. Sometimes you have to be patient and try for several days. If he does not have it after a couple of days, check the inventory in your backpack again, maybe it's already there. He won't sell what you already have.
Sometimes, as a city-to-do-task, it is required to buy a certain souvenir. But, if it's not on the list below, you don't need to keep it after buying it, but you can sell it where you like.
