Makoko is often referred to as the Venice of Africa due to its waterways! Its population is considered to be 85,840, but later estimations believe this number is much higher! It is mostly populated by Egun people whose main occupation of the people residing there is fishing. Makoko was the home of Makoko Floating School. Third Mainland Bridge
The Third Mainland Bridge is the longest of the three bridges connecting Lagos Island to the Mainland. Spanning about 11.8 km in length, it is the second longests bridge in Africa, after the 6th October Bridge in Cairo! The bridge was build by Juius Berger Nigeria PLC in the years between 1976 and 1990. While widely known as “Third Mainland Bridge”, its official name is “Ibrahim Babangida Bridge”, in honor of the Nigerian President.
