It is a colossal neoclassical sculpture designed by Frederic Bartholdi and constructed by Gustave Eiffel. It stands on Liberty Island in New York Harbor. The statue was unveiled on the 28th October 1886 and was a gift to the United States from 'the people of France'. The Statue of Liberty is known all over the world, greeting ships entering the harbor from the Atlantic Ocean. Formally it is called "Liberty Enlightening the World".
